Ok All,

I'm at my wit's end and about ready to take my grand to the scrap heap. Can anybody offer some help please:

Here is what is happening.

Jeep has very hard time starting, and currently will not start.

Vehicle - 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited - fully loaded, lifted, etc.

Aug 09 - engine replaced with 40k engine from a 94 cherokee (4.0L I6 engine)

Nov 09 - having problems starting did the following

replaced crank position sensor
replaced coil
replaced starter
replaced auto shutdown relay
replaced started relay
replaced battery
redid battery connection and verified all grounds to the engine
grounded out security system inside passenger door

Here is what I was able to do until yesterday to get vehicle to start, once running it runs great, but getting it started is getting worse and worse to accomplish.

1. Turn on Key
2. let sit for approx 30 seconds - security light comes on in dash (even after grounding out system)
3. let sit for approx 1-2 minutes - auto shutdown relay clicks rapidly for 3-5 seconds
4. check engine light comes on
5. able to start engine on first turn of key, catches immediately and runs great

Now - never get the rapid clicking in the auto shutdown relay, engine will not catch, cranks but will not catch and start.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

No idea, but one comment.  When my neighbor recently had to replace the engine on his Suburban (5.7L) he was told that the engine and the ECU had to be "matched" or it would not run.  He had to take it to the dealer to have this done after the shop swapped engines for him.  I'm thinking that his was OBD-II, but I don't know where the cutoff is.  I sort of think that yours should be OBD-I.  Have you asked a dealer about it?

Yes, have talked with Brian at Outten and the Service manager, and no help. They said first it sounds like a grounding issue.

All grounds are good. then if not that, he would lean toward the ECU issue.

I have a used one on the way from Oregon.

Can they pull any codes from it to see what is going on?

Jeep is now running.

I replaced the engine computer. and did the following.

removed the dash, and the passenger side dash compartment.
Disconnected the VTSS (vehicle theft security system), reconnected the VTSS
Manually locked and unlocked every door in the vehicle with the key
Pulled the relay within the glove box for the Security system.
reconnected everything, and the system started right up.

No waiting, no cycling, no security light. nothing.

Jeep seems to be working fine. I will give it one week before I declare it completely fixed.

still working fine, no waiting, excessive cranking, or anything else.

It appears to be working.
