The last two times that I have tried to maneuver my trailer (i.e. back it up a slight incline into a tight space), the trailer has been fairly heavily loaded (for a POS trailer). The first time the GVW of the trailer was around 1300 lb and the second time the GVW was 2,000 lb.

On both occasions I chose to use 4wd H in order to avoid damaging my lawn. This trailer has an extremely short wheel base and is still a PITA to maneuver, even after I added the flourescent antennae.

By the time I get finished the air is permeated with this terrible stench of hot, burned oil. This stench is the kind that adheres to every surface it comes into contact with, forcing you to change clothes and take a shower almost immediately. The last time this occurred it took over two days to get the odor out of the interior of the Jeep. In other words, it is impossible to locate the source of the odor using a simple sniff test--it stinks everywhere.

Having said that, after driving at highway speeds in 2wd for a few minutes, most of the odor disappears from the outside of the vehicle--but the inside is still BAD!

So . . . where do I look? Front axle seals, front diff fluid, tranny fluid, transfer case fluid, or somewhere else? There are no fluids "spotting" the driveway other than the condensation from the AC.

Please, please, please don't tell me this a normal situation--the odor is horrible. It would be nice if you could tell me I was just using the wrong range in the transfer case, but I don't think that's it.

I hate paying mechanics fees to just have them "trouble shooting" for a couple hours!

Please give me your opinions--along with suggested sollutions.

Ed,

Is it possible that you are "slipping" or riding the clutch a lot when backing/maneuvering up the hill? I would personally call the smell of a burnt clutch more or a hot brake smell than an oily smell, but with what you are describing that was my first thought, and it is a burnt smell.
I know the smell well.... that's how I got my name!

Thank you! Next time I'll try 4wdL so that I have more slowness.

I would agree, a burnt Clutch smells really bad.
